The stage is now set for the Greeneville Devils as they head to Cookeville this Saturday for the TSSAA State Championship game at Tucker Stadium.

By looking at the Devils record and considering their performance in the first three playoff games, one might mistakenly think that it has been an easy road…I mean after all, no team has even been within 15 points of the Devils all year. Well, that all changed this past Friday as the Devils took on the Panthers of Maplewood High School.  Although the Devils had a 14-0 lead at the half, the Panthers were able to cut the deficit to 7 when HB Ladarius Vanlier ran the ball for a 30 yard touchdown making it 14-7. Of course, the Panthers never scored again…primarily due to the continued nastiness of the Devils defense. The Devils intercepted the ball three times during the game, and twice while the Panthers were in the red-zone…one interception coming from Mr. Football himself, Willie Carmichael. Yeah that’s right, that kid can do it all!

With a little over 10 minutes left in the game, Coach Caine Ballard went to his senior tailback B.J. Spradlin, who carried the ball for 64 yards on 14 carries that took nearly seven minutes off the clock. The drive ended with a 28 yard game-clinching field goal that put the Devils up 17-7 without enough time for the Panthers to score again.

The Devils are now Cookeville bound as they are set to take on the Bears of Trezevant High School this Saturday at 3:30 for the TSSAA State Championship.

The Devils made it to Cookeville last year for the first time in school history, but only to lose to Giles County in the Championship game 21-14. They’ve used that devastating loss all season as motivation to work their way back to Cookeville…and they have buried their competition along the way. This team has heart; they have the passion, and I believe they are focused and determined to not only make it back to Cookeville, but to continue their dominating ways and bring GHS their first football State Championship in school history.

Should no doubt be an awesome time in Cookeville, and I cannot wait to hop in the car on Friday as I head to Greeneville, and then on to Cookeville to watch the Greeneville Devils beat the Trezevant Bears 38-13.
